Straight out of North-west London, 18-year old Bashy is making a real name for himself on the Grime circuit. With his controversial lyrics, larger than life personality and a dress code that can be seen from outer space, this daring young MC looks set to take the urban music scene by storm. MANICFM caught up with the man himself to discuss money, Sickle Cell and dead people…

How did you get into MCing?

Time ago, since the school playground. I just worked my way up clashing different people. Once I’d gained more confidence it all began to get a bit more serious. I’m not one of these mandem who just jumped on the scene five minutes ago. I’ve been involved since day and done almost every pirate there is. Freeze, Delight…you name it, I’ve done it!

Who are your main inspirations?

Anybody who’s making money. Anybody who’s just doing their ting. Anybody who’s successful. I look up to artists in every genre from Rap to RnB to Rock. The music industry is hard so anybody who makes it big has my admiration. Heartless Crew and CKP have really influenced my style.

What other UK artists are you feeling at the moment?

A few people here and there. They’re not biggin’ me up so why should I big them up?! I suppose I’m feelin’ myself the most. I’ve got a different flow to the rest.

If you could endorse any product what would it be?

A cure for sickle cell. It’s a disease among ethnic minorities that nobody knows much about. They haven’t found a cure yet but when they do, that’s what I’m gonna endorse. Standard!

Who would you like to collaborate with?

There’s a few people but they’re all dead. That’s not gonna be a good look is it?! Nah, forget dat! Hang on, lemme think, um…(about five minutes later) Gwen Stefani or Teedra Moses.

What is your ultimate aim music-wise?

To be the biggest, best, most successful UK artist there is, ever. I’m not just in this for a laugh; I wanna be at the top of my game. I’m not just looking for white label and underground success. I’ve already got that. The next step is commercial and chart success. I wanna blow everywhere. America, Russia, Mars!

Can the Grime scene achieve success in America?

Yes, if it’s marketed properly. The scene needs to be publicised in a positive light and more money needs to be pumped into it. If both of these things happen, Grime can take over the world. Standard. We don’t want this to go down the same route as UK Garage. A lot of Grime’s success is down to the press and how they perceive it.

What do you do in your spare time?

I don’t really get much spare time. I work too hard! If I do have spare time I get on my grind and write some more lyrics. That’s why I’m gonna be big!

Do you have any advice for MCs starting out in the game?

Stay focused, don’t watch nobody and just do your thing. Everybody’s time will come!
