MJ Cole Interviewed By DJ KroniK July 2004
When I got the chance to interview one of UK Garage's most well respected and most established producers, I jumped at the chance. I asked him some questions about his forthcoming album and his views on the scene as we know it and from his point of view.
Q1. A lot of your music is quite mellow and soulful. Would you say that this reflects on you as a person?
Yes, a lot of people don't appreciate how personal music making is - it's like exposing your innermost self to the public. I would like to think that I am a mellow and soulful person and I hope that comes across in my music.
Q2. Since the massive success of Sincere, how does it feel having your name in all urban music fans and also general music lovers cd collection?
The best thing about completing and releasing an album is the
thought that it will be appreciated (or not!) throughout the world at different
times for a long period to come. An album is the product of its maker and environment.
What better way to depict a period in time!
The success of my album has had nothing but a beneficial effect on my life.
Q3. So What's the name of your forthcoming album?
Forthcoming album is entitled "Cut To The Chase"
Q4. How do you feel about the route that the garage scene has taken underground and commercially?
Record buyers, tastemakers and ravers decide the course which any genre of dance music will take. The fluctuations between underground and overground are very like the movements of a giant pendulum - back and forth. Wait long enough and it will swing your way.
Q5. In the past you have worked with artists such as Sean Escopphrey, and Elizabeth Troy, who before working alongside you were not as well known commercially. Are there any artists on the new album that will be making an impression as Elizabeth and Sean have previously.
New album features: Shaun Escoffrey, Niara, Lyric L, Felon, Jill Scott, Vula, Elephant Man and Fallacy. Too many names to mention in the past! This album is more of a family affair - there's no main focus vocally.
Q6. Many people know about your classical background, What other music genres and artists have inspired you to make the music you make?
Hardcore and D&B (from '89 onwards). Present day US R&B.
Q7. Where would you like to see yourself 5 years from now?
Healthy, happy and vibing in the studio.
Q8. Who do you feel is producing good music and vocals in the garage scene at the moment.
I'm still thinking......
Q9. Finally, Are there any artists that you recommend we look out for in 2003.
Qualifide - very promising vibes
