After signing a six-figure deal with Relentless Records, Roll Deep Crew are well on their way to fame and fortune. With their unique style, professional approach and positive, upbeat attitude, these guys look set to propel the Grime scene further than it’s ever been. MANICFM caught up with the lads to discuss their new album ‘In Too Deep’, money and alcohol…
What does Roll Deep mean?
If you’re successful you’re rolling deep. It happened to us when we got a load of record labels sniffing around our feet. Nobody rolls deep by luck. You need to put in the work. We grafted hard to get here and we’re not even started. Anybody can roll deep.
What can we expect from the album?
It’s different. The front cover’s a cartoon. Crazy stuff. Just wait and see innit!
How would you describe your sound?
Grime. We’re an authentic sound from the UK that’s really making a noise.
Who are your main inspirations?
Anybody who’s successful really. We try not to watch other heads too hard cos we gotta focus on us. Our favourite crew at the moment is Dipset. They keep it as a unit and aren’t too exposed. True professionals.
What other UK artists are you feeling?
Gosh, too many names to mention! Nasty Crew, Essentials, SLK…anybody in the Grime scene that’s making a noise really. This game is very competitive and if you’re getting noticed you must be good. Anything good, we’re feeling. Standard.
Who would you like to collaborate with?
Gosh there’s loads! Probably Styles P, Dipset…anybody who’s doing it big.
How did you get into MCing?
As kids we used to love jungle. Most of us started out making tapes and the more we did, the more positive feedback we received. That gave us the confidence to progress and push ourselves harder. The rest is history!
If you could endorse any product what would it be?
We wanna release our own alcoholic drink like Dipset have, something for the
kids innit. It aint out yet but when it is go and buy it. Roll Deep on ice!
What is your ultimate aim music-wise?
To be the most successful Grime crew there is. We’re gonna take over. Standard.
Can Roll Deep achieve success in America?
Yes definitely because we’re coming with a different point of view. It’s English. They’ve never had that. Grime’s gonna be the next HipHop. It’s better than UK Hip Hop cos it stands out as something different. America…be afraid!
What do you do in your spare time?
Just chill innit. Bun, play a bit of playstation…the usual.
Do you have any advice for MCs starting out in the game?
Come with something different. Don’t think you can pretend cos people will see straight through you. Be authentic!
